Thanks for keeping this Blog up. I am about to embark on building my own deck. A Monster 800 sq ft. This will be the second one I have built myself but double the size of before. I have decided to log my progress step by step also. Here goes...

Nice to see you've kept this blog alive for years. This is helpful to newbies like myself trying to decide if taking a project like this on is "doable". I am convinced it is.

Do you have pictures of the actual skirt framing to see how it is all attached? I'm trying to do the same but not sure how to get started particularly since my rim joist sits very low to the ground and I don't think I'll enough clearance to hammer in the stakes

Compliments on your new deck and you provided great documentation of your build.
I am deck builder in Massachusetts and know how difficult it can be building for perfection.
Make sure you keep that stained in that hot sun so it does not dry out!

Stumbled across your site looking for skirting designs and tips but didn't expect to get a decking 101 class. Thanks for the hard work and detail.

I've just started building my deck and only have the posts set. The design and permit were completed a month ago. I really wish I would have stumbled upon your site earlier. Excellent step-by-step details along with great photos. You've given me good tips & tricks to implement as I construct my deck - including the resources on bestdecksite.com. Thank You for this excellent website! The world needs more good folks like you.

Good blog. Very informative for the DIY. It is possible to build a deck without hiring a pro. Check out some of our work http://www.kcdeckandpatio.com

Nice job!!
I'm always impressed to see the immaculate job a person can do even with limited experience. Many times, a project turns out better than when the "old pro" does it. There is a greater desire to learn from many builders about the positives/negatives of products and different building methods. Quality and code issues mean much more to the new builder as opposed to the Git-r-done builder. Enjoyed following the project!

This is a good example of how doing it yourself can save you a lot of money and come out even better than if you hired out a deck builder. Nice job! You're lucky that you're able to do this stuff on your own and I think this is a great resource that can help others with the ambition to tackle a project like this on their own!

I used a water level when I recently built my deck based on recommendations here. It was cheap and worked great! Everything was dead on. Thanks!

This is very well done! I'd like to link this to my blog, if possible. My blog is more about preserving and maintaining decks.

Great site, well done deck!! it's nice to see sites like this where things are done right! I've seen so many shady and unsafe deck builds in my time. All decks should be built like this one!

The deck turned out great! I just built mine and went with the Ipe Clip Hidden Deck Fasteners. It turned out amazing and their clips were easy to use.
