Right tools for the job
You don't need many tools to put a deck together. I collected some tools before starting that I thought would make the job go easier. I indicate in my list the tools which are neccessary no matter what and the tools which are "optional". I found that the "optional" tools were the ones that made the job MUCH easier and I would highly recommend them to anyone. Thanks to my tool collection I always had the right tool for the job and the deck build went without a hitch.
My Tool List:
- Must Haves
- Circular Saw
- Powerful Drill. I used a corded drill, the 14V cordless I had just didn't have the power and staying power
- Levels (4', 2', line levels, post levels)
- Clamps (several sizes)
- Hammers/Sledge Hammers
- Speed Square
- Shovel/Clamshell digger
- Wheelbarrow
- Socket Set
- Tape Measures
- Lots of drill and screwdriver bits
- Optionals
- Impact Driver - This was the most useful tool I had when building my deck. I bought a Dewalt cordless (18V) impact driver just for this job. It was worth every penny! What a tool!! Even though it's cordless it puts out an INCREDIBLE amount of power. This tool was used for every single screw and bolt on my deck!!
- Power planer
- 12" Powered Compound Miter Saw
- 10" Powered Table Saw
- Water Level
- Hydraulic Auger (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!)
- Compressor/Finishing Nail gun
- Dremel
- Power Sander
- Pressure washer
